The Journey of Cashew Trees: From Seed to Harvest - A Cajuu Perspective

Cashews, the beloved buttery nuts, have an intriguing journey from tiny seeds to the lush trees that bear them. As a cashew selling company committed to providing the finest quality nuts, Cajuu takes pride in sharing the fascinating process of growing cashew trees.

In this blog, we will delve into the stages of a cashew tree's growth, offering insights from the unique Cajuu perspective.

Stage 1: Germination - Planting the Seeds

The process of growing a cashew tree begins with planting the seeds, also known as cashew nuts. These seeds are carefully selected for their quality and potential to grow into healthy trees. At Cajuu, we source our cashew nuts from reputable suppliers to ensure the best start for each sapling.

Stage 2: Soil and Climate Requirements

Cashew trees thrive in tropical climates with warm temperatures and adequate rainfall. They prefer sandy-loam soil that is well-draining and rich in organic matter. At Cajuu, we prioritise sustainability and ethical practices, ensuring that our cashew trees are cultivated in ideal environments that support their healthy growth.

Interesting fact about Cajuu:

We exclusively and directly source our cashews from the Makonde Plateau in southern Tanzania, a region which due to its environment, soil conditions and climate make for amazing quality produce - including cashew nuts!

Stage 3: Germination and Sprouting

After planting the seeds, they undergo a germination period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, the seeds absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil, eventually sprouting to form small cashew saplings. Cajuu ensures that these saplings receive the utmost care to promote strong and robust growth.

Stage 4: Transplanting

Once the cashew saplings reach a suitable height of about 6 to 8 inches, they are transplanted to their permanent locations in the orchard. Careful consideration is given to the spacing between trees to optimise their growth and ensure proper sunlight exposure.

Stage 5: Growth and Maintenance

Cashew trees typically take 2 to 3 years to mature and bear fruit. Throughout this period, regular maintenance is crucial. At Cajuu, our team of experienced farmers closely monitors the trees, providing essential nutrients, water, and protection from pests and diseases.

Stage 6: Flowering and Fruit Development

As the cashew trees mature, they enter the flowering stage. Cashew trees are unique as they produce both male and female flowers on the same tree. These flowers undergo pollination, and once fertilised, the cashew apples begin to develop. It takes approximately 8 to 10 weeks for the cashew apples to ripen.

Stage 7: Harvesting

When the cashew apples reach maturity, they are ready for harvest. The harvesting process involves carefully plucking the cashew apples from the branches. Each cashew apple contains a single cashew nut attached to the bottom, encased within the cashew nut shell. The collected cashew apples are then sent for further processing to extract the cashew nuts.

The journey of a cashew tree from a tiny seed to a mature, fruit-bearing marvel is a testament to nature's wonders and the dedication of farmers. As a cashew selling company, Cajuu values the entire process, from selecting premium cashew nuts to nurturing and harvesting healthy cashew trees.
